Chinnappa steals the show

MUMBAI Nov. 23. Deepak Chinnappa raced to victory in the Asian Zone National Karting finals of the MRF-MAI Formule Mondiale Championship on Sunday. The 16-year-old from Bangalore, who is less experienced compared to others in the fray, scored a second place finish in Indian National Karting Championship (INKC) and is now leading the overall points tally in both categories. The Mumbai leg, co-sponsored by Indian Oil and Briggs and Stratton, was conducted at the Acres Club.

Chinnappa, starting behind Pune's Rayomand Banajee in the AZNKC race, roared into the lead from the outset and withstood Mumbai challenger Ameya Walavalkar over 35 laps to win, and was followed home by Walavalkar and Banajee respectively. A sixth position in the Chennai round of the AZNKC followed by this victory has pushed him into the lead with 13 points, ahead of favourite Jigar Muni (10), who ended up in the 10th spot.

The Bangalore racer had the crowd rooting for him in the INKC, but he jostled for the top spot with Banajee but could not overtake the Pune driver for 29 laps, and ended up finishing within a second to Banajee. Chinappa's eight points swelled his overall tally to 34, ahead of Banajee's 33.

Ashwin Sunder continued his winning streak in the Kadet-INKC, finishing ahead of Kolhapur's Chittesh Mandody.
