Torn national flag creates tension on OU campus

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD NOV. 24. Using a pierced national flag during a `treasure hunt' programme at Chrisalys-2003, an event organised by a private management college, led to tension here on Osmania University Campus on Monday when an angry group of university students beat up the organisers accusing them of insulting national flag.

Both, university students and the event organisers, lodged complaints with the Osmania University police. While a case was booked against the event organisers under Section 2 of Prevention of Dishonour to National Flag Act and an assault case was registered against the students. "We're investigating if using the national flag with a tear was intentional or accidental", the Kachiguda ACP, A. Venkateswara Rao, said.

The Vignan Jyothi Institute of Management was organising Chrisalys-2003, a festival for students of management colleges, at Tagore auditorium on OU Campus. As part of the event, several competitions were organised including treasure hunt. "The organisers hid some national flags and beer bottles, to be found out by the participants in the treasure hunt', Mr. Rao said. A group of students, led by the Akhila Bharatiya Vidya Parishad (ABVP), entered into an argument with the organisers after noticing a national flag with a rip.

With students alleging that the organisers had insulted the national flag and the latter refuting the charges, a clash ensued between them. No arrests were made.
