Dhaka dismisses Delhi's charge

By Haroon Habib

DHAKA Nov. 25. Bangladesh has rejected the charge of India's Northeast Affairs Minister, C.P. Thakur, that it was responsible for the current spate of violence in Assam and termed the allegation as "totally baseless, unfounded and motivated."

A Foreign Ministry spokesman said Mr. Thakur's efforts to "malign" Bangladesh by alleging that it was involved in activities to "destabilise India" was "unfortunately not new."He said, "Bangladesh has made it clear that it does not and will not allow its territory to be used by anyone to carry out activities against another country."

He said that Mr. Thakur's remarks were part of a "sustained campaign that is best avoided in the interest of maintaining friendly and good neighbourly relations."

Dhaka wanted friendly relations with Delhi and hoped that Indian leaders would refrain from making "irresponsible and biased" statements that would only create misunderstandings between the two countries.
