10 injured in CPI(M)-VHP clash near Marad

By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE NOV. 25. Ten persons were injured in clashes between activists of the CPI(M) and the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) in the sensitive area of Payyannakal, near Marad, here this morning.

Nine of the injured have been admitted to the Government Beach Hospital and one at a private hospital here. Six of them are DYFI/ CPI(M) activists and the others belong to the VHP.

The police have arrested 18 CPI(M) activists including the CPI(M) Kozhikode Corporation councillor, Meladi Narayanan, and the DYFI Payyanakkal unit secretary, Aziz, and two VHP activists in connection with the incident. Cases have also been registered against 60 persons.

The police said that the trouble started when the VHP activists tore the provocative posters put by the DYFI activists on the notice board at the Kappakkal unit. The heated arguments between the two groups led to a minor skirmish.

Later both these groups also took out a protest march at Payyanakkal. This resulted in clashes between the two groups. A police jeep was also partially damaged in stone throwing incidents.

The Assistant Commissioner of Police, K. Sreenivas and the Revenue Divisional Officer, P. Balan, rushed to the spot to disperse the agitated groups.
