Tamil Nadu in summit clash

KOLKATA NOV. 25. Tamil Nadu made its maiden entry to the final of the inter-State squash championship, beating Services 4-1 in the team semifinals here at the Calcutta Racket Club on Tuesday. In the other semifinal, defending champion Delhi got the better of Maharashtra 3-2.

The team, primarily composed of youngsters from the Indian Cements squash academy, put up a commendable performance. While Vinayak Shetty was unfortunate finishing on the wrong end of a gruelling five-setter against Anshuman Choudhary of Services, A. Parthiban made amends in the next match outliving D. Sisodia which too stretched to the decider. Saurav Ghoshal, the defending under-19 champion, blew away the challenge posed by Services' Vikas Jangra in straight games.

The results: Semifinals: Tamil Nadu bt Services 4-1 (Vinayak Shetty (TN) lost to Anshuman Choudhary (Services) 9-5, 6-9, 9-1, 4-9, 7-9; A. Parthiban bt D. Sisodia 9-6, 5-9, 9-5, 2-9, 9-5; Saurav Ghoshal bt Vikas Jangra 9-1, 9-0, 9-2; Harinderpal Singh bt Samir Khare (walkover); Bala Murugan bt Tarun Naini (walkover)).

Delhi bt Maharashtra 3-2 (Yashvardhan Singh (Delhi) lost to Mahesh Verma (Maharashtra) 2-9, 1-9, 1-9; Amjad Khan bt Karan Bhatty 9-2, 9-0, 4-9, 9-2; Ritwick Bhattacharya bt Sahil Vora 9-4, 9-4, 9-1; Akshat Gupta lost to Sandeep Jangra 7-9, 4-9, 9-4, 4-9; Gaurav Nandrajog bt Supreet Singh 9-3, 9-1, 9-3).
