Show commitment to Oslo pact, LTTE told

By V.S. Sambandan

COLOMBO. Nov. 25. The European Union's Commissioner in charge of External Relations, Chris Patten, today said the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) would "have to show'' its continued commitment to last year's Oslo agreement in which it agreed to find a solution to the separatist conflict within a united Sri Lanka based on federal models.

Sharing the EU's experience in conflict resolution at a public meeting here, Mr. Patten said the international community expected the Tigers to give up violence, stop child recruitment, abductions and political killings. The LTTE, he said, would have to show that it was "absolutely committed to the peace process''.

Emphasising the territorial integrity of Sri Lanka, Mr. Patten said the LTTE would have to show that it was "still committed'' to the "undertaking it gave in Oslo'' that a solution would be "within the contours of a single Sri Lanka''. Mr. Patten will be travelling to rebel-held Kilinochchi tomorrow to meet the LTTE chief, V. Prabakaran.

Patten meets President

Mr. Patten, who arrived here early this morning, met the President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, and her Senior Adviser on Foreign Affairs, Lakshman Kadirgamar.
