Net-based CME at Medical College opens up avenues

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov. 25. The successful experiment with Internet-based video-conferencing on diabetes conducted between the Medical College and the Minnesota-based Mayo Clinic the other day has opened a new avenue for cost-effective collaboration in the dissemination of medical knowledge.

The near three-hour interactive programme was conducted by the Indian Institute of Diabetes, the Internal Medicine department of the Medical College, the Endocrinology division of Mayo Clinic and the All Kerala Medical Graduates association of Malayali doctors working in the U.S. and Canada.

The Internet Protocol-based conference involved the use of high-speed terminals with 1.2 Mbps bandwidth hosted free of cost by two private service providers.

The Mayo faculty which took part in the programme comprised John Miles, Robert Albright, Steven Kavors and Steven Smith.

The Medical College Principal, Rema, and Mathew Thomas, chief of internal medicine were among those who participated.

Jothydev, practitioner of internal medicine currently at the Mayo Clinic and Peter Wegwerth, video engineer, besides Sameer Badarudeen, orthopaedic surgeon at the Medical College, were instrumental in organising the event.
