Moscow fire kills Chennai girl

MOSCOW NOV. 26. One Indian student died, another is missing and six are in hospital following the fire that gutted a dormitory of the Patrice Lumumba Friendship University in Moscow on Monday. Lakshmi, a Chennai girl, was charred to death in the fire that engulfed the hostel when most of the 272 students were fast asleep. Lakshmi, who arrived just weeks back, would have turned 19 on November 28. Another student, Mangesh, 23, is listed missing. The toll in the fire increased to 37 on Tuesday as another person died in hospital today.

As of Wednesday 167 students are in hospital, including six Indians: Kishore Kumar, Sachin Salunge, Amirudh Deshmukh all from Maharashtra, Vidhya Rani and Dineshwari from Manipur and Prasoon Kumar Mondal from West Bengal. The condition of Prasoon Kumar, Amirudh and Vidhya Rani was stated to be serious. Renny T. Sam, president of the Indian Students Association, told The Hindu, that 12 Indian students lived in the burnt dormitory.
