'Better Indo-Pak. ties will promote peace'

By P.S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE Nov. 26. China has said that a greater level of "trust" and "better relations" between India and Pakistan would not only serve the interests of the two South Asian countries and their peoples but also be "conducive to regional peace and development."

The Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman, Liu Jianchao, said in response to a question at a regular press conference in Beijing on Tuesday that China "sincerely hopes" that India and Pakistan could continue to "ease their bilateral ties," resume dialogue as soon as possible and "remove their differences peacefully."

The spokesman made these observations in answer to a question on Pakistan's latest ceasefire initiative, which India later reciprocated.

In Tokyo, the Japanese Foreign Ministry's Press Secretary, Hatsuhisa Takashima, has welcomed India's "positive response" to the Pakistan Prime Minister's latest announcement on a "complete ceasefire along the Line of Control" in Jammu and Kashmir with effect from Ramzan.

About the "set of proposals" that Islamabad had now made to improve India-Pakistan ties, Japan expressed the "hope" that Pakistan's move and India's response would further promote their bilateral relations.
