CBI raids to trace Madhumani

New Delhi Nov. 26. After securing a non-bailable warrant against Madhumani Tripathi, the CBI today conducted raids at various places in Uttar Pradesh and Uttranchal to track her down even as a senior IPS officer of the rank of Inspector General was questioned for allegedly suppressing evidence in Madhumita Shukla case.

The raids were conducted at the official residence of her husband and former BSP Minister Amarmani Tripathi, besides her home at their native place in Gorakhpur, agency sources said here.

The raids began early this morning and various teams were dispatched to track her down after she went "missing" from November 10 when the alleged killer of 24-year-old poetess, Madhumita, Prakash Chander Pandey was arrested by the CBI.

Several rest houses and residences of Madhumani and Amarmani's relatives were searched by the CBI, which secured a non-bailable warrant against her from a designated court on November 24.

Madhumani had got a reprieve from the High Court last month when it had ordered the CBI to arrest her only after the agency claimed it had "irrefutable" evidence against her. But the court had directed Madhumani to appear before the CBI as and when required.

CBI questioned Inspector General of Police A.K. Jain, a 1979 batch IPS officer for alleged suppression and destroying of evidence last evening, they said. The name of Jain, who has denied any involvement, figured during the interrogation of Inspector Yagya Narain Dixit who was arrested by CBI on November 15 on charges of "suppression of facts" and "illegal confinement" of people.

Attempts to reach Jain for his comments did not fructify.

The CBI has alleged that some police officials in the State had connived with politicians in "destroying, suppressing and creating fake evidences." Madhumani, in the meantime, has moved the designated court for recalling of the NBW against her on the plea that it was issued without giving her an opportunity to be heard. --PTI
