10 soldiers drown in Jaffna

By V.S. Sambandan

COLOMBO Nov. 26. Ten Sri Lankan Army soldiers have been reported drowned in northern Jaffna Peninsula this evening during a ``training exercise''.

Ruling out ``any explosion,'' defence sources told The Hindu that the ``tragic incident'' occurred when four soldiers, who were ``completing the last leg of a cross-country training exercise,'' drowned in ``fairly deep muddy waters'' in a Government-held zone of Jaffna.

Seven soldiers went to their rescue, and of whom six drowned. The soldier who was rescued had been hospitalised.
