ISRO to set up village information kiosks

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI NOV. 27. The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has planned to generate village information kiosks to empower the rural populace to improve their quality of life, its Chairman, G.Madhavan Nair, said today.

Delivering the convocation address at the Anna University here, he said the facility would be created jointly with the State Governments, entrepreneurs and non-government organisations.

Plans are afoot to set up a Disaster Management Support Services network which would link with other knowledge networks to address pre and post-disaster management issues.

It has been proposed to augment satellite based weather information services to help the meteorological department to improve its forecasting capabilities.

"In short, India has a vision to make space technology become part of everyday life".

The ISRO was working jointly with the Anna University to develop a micro-satellite, Anusat. Other plans included using remote sensing data to periodically bring out natural resources census which would be available as part of the National Spatial Data Infrastructure to be set up jointly by government agencies and Ministries.
