Fresh violence rocks J&K

Srinagar Nov. 27. Violence flared anew in Jammu and Kashmir today, leaving at least 12 dead.

Four security personnel were seriously injured in an ambush by militants in Beerwah area of Badgam district.

Heavily-armed militants hurled a grenade and opened fire on a joint search party of the CRPF, the local police and the Rashtriya Rifles at Gundipora village.

One soldier received bullet injuries while three others were injured when their vehicle turned turtle as its driver lost control due to the sudden attack.

A grenade attack on a busy market in Srinagar killed a shopkeeper and wounded nine passers-by, two of them seriously.

``There is no ceasefire with the rebels,'' said Yusuf Naqshbandi, a schoolteacher who witnessed today's grenade attack. ``So we will continue to bear the brunt of the violence.''

Earlier, a pre-dawn gunbattle in Nowgam village, about 100 km north of Srinagar, left four suspected rebels dead and several houses destroyed, police said. Details were sketchy, but Ahmed said suspected militants were surrounded by security forces. — PTI
