PSPB Academy, CoE enter final

By Our Sports Reporter

Devesh Karia, who played a big role in defending champion PSPB Academy entering the boys' final at the 65th LIC junior National table tennis championship in Kochi on Friday.

KOCHI NOV. 28. The last time Devesh Karia came to Kerala, for the sub-junior Nationals in Kozhikode four years ago, he was a jittery little boy. Almost close to tears during close matches. "Once he gets hold of his nerves, he will be a player to watch,'' the Chinese coach Yin Wei had said then. Devesh, a lot taller and handsome now, came out stronger after some close matches on Friday as the PSPB Academy marched into the boys inter-State team final of the 65th LIC Junior National table tennis championship at the Rajiv Gandhi indoor stadium here.

The Centre of Excellence, which is making its debut here, entered the boys' final as expected, downing Maharashtra 3-0.

The Petroleum Academy's winning margin in the semifinal was 3-0, but all its boys were forced to sweat for points by the spirited Bengal players. Devesh was taken the full distance by Chiranjib Chowdhury in the opener, but the stylish left-hander played a clever game, using the flanks nicely to outwit his opponent.

Tamil Nadu, last year's boys' runner-up, fell in a tight quarterfinal against Maharashtra earlier.
