Editor of Urdu daily dies of injuries

BANGALORE Nov. 28. Mir Badruddin Ali, Editor of Daily Salar, an Urdu daily, who was injured in a hit-and-run accident on Thursday night, died at a hospital early today. He was 58. Mr. Ali is survived by wife, four daughters, and a son.

Mr. Ali was seriously injured when a car hit his moped while he was going home after work around 9 p.m. near Command Hospital on Airport Road. He was admitted to Manipal Hospital, where he died.

Mr. Ali joined the Urdu daily as sub-editor 35 years ago. He was also an active member of the Al-Ameen movement.

He was known for his forthright comments and his recent editorial on freedom of the press after the developments in Chennai involving top editors and journalists of The Hindu and Murasoli was carried by two Urdu dailies published from Mumbai.

The Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, has mourned the death of Mr. Ali. He said that Mr. Ali was an ardent sportsman and a proficient journalist. He played a key role in popularising Urdu journalism.

The Minister for Information, Allum Veerabhadrappa, has also condoled the death of Mr. Ali. In a statement, Mr. Veerabhadrappa said in Mr. Ali's death, Urdu journalism had lost a doyen in the field.

The Minister of State for Information and Broadcasting, Ravi Shankar Prasad, has also mourned the death of Mr. Ali.
