Plight of block printing industry dominates campaigning

By Our Staff Correspondent

SANGANER (RAJASTHAN) NOV. 29. The threat of permanent closure looming large on the world-famous block printing industry in this town on the outskirts of the State capital has dominated electioneering in the Sanganer Assembly constituency, even though no political party is in a position to bring reprieve to the affected people, as the matter is sub judice.

The Rajasthan High Court had in March this year ordered relocation of the printing industry to avoid water and environmental pollution in the town on a public interest litigation. A review petition on behalf of hundreds of families engaged in the avocation for many generations has since been moved in the High Court.

The contest has become triangular with a former Minister in the Bhairon Singh Shekhawat Government, Vidya Pathak, jumping into the fray as an Indian National Lok Dal candidate. The electoral fight is intense as the Congress and BJP candidates are well-known figures.

The sitting MLA, Indira Mayaram, who was dropped from the State Cabinet in the last reshuffle, is the Congress candidate, whereas the BJP has shifted its veteran leader, Ghanshaym Tiwari, from nearby Chomu to Sanganer. Mr. Tiwari, despite facing some resentment for being an ``outsider'', has succeeded in posing a strong challenge to his opponents.
