MUDIGONDA (Khammam dist), Nov. 29. The Mahaprasthanam Padayatra of the CPI(M) helped in setting a special agenda for the development of Khammam. The CPI(M) central committee member, Tammineni Veerabhdram, who reached the village late on Friday night completing 2,600 km by foot as part of the yatra, said that the 100-day programme could fulfil the very purpose for which it was organised in the district. He said that over 15,000 representations were received in 1,070 villages and hamlets covered by the yatra so far. A majority of the representations pertained to issues serious in nature. Some were grievances that could have been sorted out by spending a few thousands of rupees but could not be addressed to so far for one reason or the other. He said that the district committee had entrusted to a special panel the task of preparing a suggestive plan for the district development. A delegation of the party leaders who took part in the Mahaprasthanam Padayatra would leave for Hyderabad within a fortnight to meet the Governor and the Chief Minister. The delegation would strive to impress upon the Government to act immediately on the development plan. He said that the party had planned to pay more attention to the issues taken note of during the yatra in the next few months. The issues would be taken up with the district authorities concerned and try to give a solution to each of the problem under a time bound programme. He informed that some of the representations received during the yatra were about the inadequate facilities in the hostels and congestion in school buildings. So far as the tribal area was concerned, the Integrated Tribal Development Agency could respond positively to the representations immediately. So was the case with the State Road Transport Corporation. A representation given by 37 casual labourers in Bhadrachalam depot was taken into consideration and the management had assured the workers to look into the matter. The corporation had already assured to ply bus services to some villages not covered so far. On issues pertaining to minor irrigation, he said the yatra helped in gathering complete information. The administration already had a meeting of the officials concerned on the irrigation issues. The party would make a representation on the problems in the irrigation sector once the yatra was concluded. With regard to educational facilities, there had been some improvement in the agency areas, he said. But improvement claimed in the services rendered by the hospital was not true. The administration had got a great deal to do to ensure better medical facilities to the poor. The CPI(M) leader said that the illicit distillation was a major problem noticed during the yatra in the villages. Housewives were fed up with the problem. The youth were also seriously agitated over the issue. The party was planning a sustained campaign on arrack in the next phase. The Mahaprasthanam Padayatra would come to a close on December 1. It will culminate in a public rally in the town. The rally would be attended by the senior leaders of the party.
