Police wield pen to take on naxals

By Our Staff Reporter

KARIMNAGAR NOV. 29. In the wake of naxalites resorting to killing of individual targets in interior villages branding them informants, the Karimnagar police have brought out a monthly magazine - `Nigha' (meaning surveillance) - to sensitise the targets, including politicians, local bodies representatives and others about the safety measures they should adopted.

The intensified military strategies on the one hand and the campaign aimed at educating the individual targets has already forced naxalites to be on the defensive.

`Nigha', with the slogan "your ultimate protection shield" will be distributed among the individual targets. The magazine, besides giving valuable tips on the safety measures they should adopt during their stay in villages, also cites instances of how some targets had protected themselves courageously.

The magazine also features an interview with the surrendered PWG District Committee secretary, Bhumanna alias Sathaiah. He gives information about how a target is fixed, the strategies adopted and how a recce is conducted.

In another column, one of the targets, Baddam Satyanarayana Reddy, vividly describes how he had escaped from naxalite attack on three occasions and says, ``Individual alertness and courage and as long as the family members, relatives and villagers are with you, no one can cause any harm."

An account was also given about how naxalites had killed Kondam Vittal Reddy in Namapur village of Mustabad mandal and Bachu Nandaiah in Ambaripeta village of Kathalapur mandal. The analysis highlights the mistakes committed by the targets, and how they could have escaped by adopting minimum safety measures. The magazine also gives tips on how to identify naxalites' action team members.
