Andhra Pradesh
By Our Staff Reporter
Speaking to reporters here today he said though the other communities comprise about 40 per cent of the State population most of them were living below poverty line. The NDA Government at the Centre had announced constitution of a commission to explore the issue of providing reservation to the poor among the Other Communities in education and employment six months back but nothing further had been done so far. The State Government which had been allocating huge amounts for the welfare of reserved communities had failed even to provide textbooks to the poor Other Communities as part of Chaduvula Panduga programme. It would have cost the Government mere Rs. 5 crores, he noted. The one-crore sops of the Government too were mostly aimed at the reserved categories. He demanded that the State and Central Governments release a white paper on the funds spent by them for welfare and development schemes for the reserved categories from 1950, since when the quota system was introduced, and for the poor other communities. As the economic criteria had not been taken for reservation the poor other communities were deprived of Government help badly, he said. He criticise the politicians who would win with the 40 per cent votes of other communities but would neglect them later. The education, science and technology sectors were badly affected due to encouragement of reserved categories at the cost of talented among the other communities. Mr. Karunakar Reddy demanded all political party in the State to clarify their stand on the issue of poor other communities before going to the people seeking votes.
