Congress promises to hold talks with People's War

By Our Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA NOV. 29. The former Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president, M. Satyanarayana Rao, has said the Congress, if elected to power in the coming Assembly elections, will hold talks with the People`s War and find a lasting solution to the law and order problem.

Speaking to newspersons here today, he said that the Congress had realised that naxalism was a socio-economic problem and needed to be addressed as such. But the Telugu Desam Party had turned down the suggestions to hold talks with the People's War. Despite its majority in the Assembly the TDP could not find solution to the naxalite problem in the last eight years.

The Congress would not seek votes showing sympathy to naxalites. But it would present "the reality'' to people.

Asked whether the Congress would have an alliance with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi, Mr. Satyanarayana Rao said that the high command had been seized of the issue and it would be too early for him to comment on it. He said that nobody could deny the fact that Telangana had been neglected for too long. Special schemes were necessary to develop the region.

He stressed the need to harness 800 tmcft of Godavari water going waste into the sea for development of Telangana region. He admitted that the internal bickering in the Congress posed a problem. He said that the high command had been seized of the problem.

He expressed confidence to sort out these group rivalries by holding meetings at the constituency and district levels soon. He said he had been asked to sort out the differences between the two groups led by Devineni Rajasekhar Nehru and P. Upendra in the City Congress Committee.

He held discussions with Mr. Rajasekhar today and he agreed to patch up the differences. He would also meet Mr. Upendra soon and prevail upon him to work with the rival group in the interest of the party.
