The derailment occurred when the passenger (train 685), which left Tiruchi at 3.45 p.m., was entering the station on the loop line around 4.40 p.m. The derailment took place when the train was moving at a slow speed and the alert driver of the diesel engine applied the brakes immediately, owing to which there was no injury to any passenger. A Diesel Electric Multiple Unit (DEMU) from Karur picked up the stranded passengers who were onboard the Tiruchi-Erode passenger. The Tiruchi Divisional Railway Manager, N.S. Kasturi Rangan, later told The Hindu that a departmental enquiry would be ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident. On receipt of information, a brake down special was moved to the spot. Except the derailed engine and the compartment, the rest of the formation was pulled back to the Mutharasanallur station. Around 8 p.m., the main line was cleared for normal traffic, railway authorities here said. Due to the derailment, the Tiruchi-Karur passenger was cancelled between Tiruchi and Perugamani, while the Karur-Tiruchi passenger was cancelled between Perugamani and Tiruchi. The Tiruchi-Ernakulam Tea Garden Express left Tiruchi at 8.20 p.m., over 50 minutes behind the scheduled time. The Coimbatore-Thanjavur Jan Shatabdi was regulated at Kulithalai.
