Rain lashes southern districts, farmers jubilant

Thanjavur Nov. 29. Heavy rain lashed Thanjavur and Tiruvarur districts today. Low-lying areas were inundated. The rain brought cheers to farmers who have undertaken samba cultivation.

Agriculture department officials said samba transplantation would pick up in the district.

``There is no problem for next 15 days and the rain may help in achieving the samba target in the district. So far transplantation had been completed on 60,000 hectares'', the officials said.

Rainfall recorded till 8 a.m. today: Thanjavur 35 mm, Budalur 24 mm, Vallam 25 mm, Papanasam 15mm, Manjalar 14 mm, Pattukottai 18.6 mm, Peravurani 30 mm, Madukkur 11 mm, Adhirampattinam 29.3 mm, Kumbakonam 7 mm, Neyvasal Thenpathi 29.6 mm, Tiruvarur 8.2 mm, Thiruthuraipoondi 16.4 mm, Needamangalam 19.4 mm, Kodavasal 30 mm, Nannilam 20.2 mm and Muthupettai 25 mm.

Showers in Tiruchi

Heavy rain lashed Tiruchi, Pudukottai, Perambalur and Karur districts on Saturday. Several parts of the districts received sharp showers for the second day.

In Tiruchi city, several low-lying areas and arterial roads were inundated. Overcast and chilly weather conditions prevailed through out the day in Tiruchi and in neighbouring districts.

Several parts of Perambalur and Karur also experienced heavy downpour. Widespread rainfall was also reported from Pudukottai district.

Rainfall recorded in various centres during the past 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m., Saturday were (in mm): Tiruchi - Sirugudi 45, Tiruchi junction 38.5, Tiruchi Town 36.6, Golden Rock 32.4, Lalgudi 31, Nandiyar 30, Pullampadi 26.2, Manapparai 23, Musiri 21.3, Navalurkuttapattu 21, Melanai and Pulivalam 18, Tiruchi Airport 17.7 and Kallakudi 10.

Pudukottai - Pudukottai 24, Andakulam 30, Illupur 14.5, Annavasal 20.4, Viralimalai 18.3, Keeranur 17, Tirumayam 11.6, Keezhanilai 19, Alangudi 15, Karambakudi 20, Malaiyur 25, Gandharvakottai 15, Aranthangi 33, Manamelkudi 22, Avudayarkovil 20 and Meemisal 14.2.

Perambalur - Ariyalur 20, Padalur 17, Senthurai 12.2 and Thazuthazhi 10, Chettikulam and Perambalur 7.

Ramnad farmers happy

Heavy rain lashed various parts of Ramanathapuram district today. The rain will be beneficial to farming community who have raised paddy on over 93,000 hectares and alternative crops on over 17,000 hectares in different parts of the district.

Normal life hit at Theni

Dindigul district witnessed heavy showers and normal life was disrupted in Theni district today due to the rain.

In Dindigul district, farmers are happy, as the rain will be useful for maize crops cultivated in Oddanchatram and Palani taluks and vegetable crops at Kodaikanal.

Farmers in Theni district were jubilant as the rain was sufficient to protect standing crops and improve ground water levels. Inflow in to the Periyar and Vaigai dams was very meagre due to poor rain in catchment areas.

Water level stood at 57.10 feet in Vaigai dam (full level 71 feet) with an inflow of 191 cusecs and discharge of 828 cusecs including 30 cusecs for drinking water to Madurai city. In Periyar dam, level stood at 116.40 feet (full level 136 feet) with an inflow of 84 cusecs and discharge of 500 cusecs for irrigation in Cumbum valley.

Good flow into Courtallam falls

Tirunelveli district today experienced widespread rainfall, thanks to the trough prevailing in the southwest Bay.

While the terrain received only drizzle, Western Ghats experienced good showers in the evening, resulting in good flow of water in the Courtallam falls. Public were prevented from taking bath in the Main Falls since water was flowing beyond the arch.

The catchment areas of the major reservoirs received good rainfall, PWD sources said.

The widespread rainfall in Madurai district for the second day today brought cheers to farmers. The city experienced incessant drizzles throughout the day, with intermittent showers.

The rainfall registered in various places in the past 24 hours (in mm): Melur - 8, Manjalar dam 7, Thaniyamangalam and Pulipatti 5 each, Kallandiri 4, Periyar, Madurai city and Sothuparai dam 3 each and Gudalur, Sathaiyar dam, Chittampatti and Idayapatti 2 each.

Traffic affected in Pondy

Pondicherry received heavy rain today. Traffic came to a halt in the Union Territory.

Low-lying areas were water logged. The Directorate of School Education cancelled Children's Day celebrations scheduled for today at the Indira Gandhi Sports Complex.
