`TN Assembly must take the lead in codifying privileges'

By Our Staff Reporter

SALEM NOV. 29. Going by the recent developments, it is good to codify the privileges of legislatures, P. Chidambaram, Congress Jananayaga Peravai's founder-leader, has said.

The manner in which Speakers of some legislatures were conducting themselves called for a codification. The Tamil Nadu Assembly itself should come forward to codify its privileges. "Why cannot it show the way to the country," he asked.

Talking to the media here today, Mr. Chidambaram reiterated his stand that the public prosecutor in the wealth case should resign.

Referring to the DMK submitting a memorandum to the Governor yesterday, charging the public prosecutor with having subverted justice, Mr. Chidambaram said that he had no faith in submitting such petitions. He termed the recent controversy involving the High Court judge, Karpagavinayagam, as "regrettable and avoidable". Political leaders and parties should desist from making comments on cases committed before the court.

Mr. Chidambaram criticised The Tamil Nadu Government for its decision to run IMFL shops. He blamed the police for the flow of illicit brew in the State.

Welcoming the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, meeting her Andhra Pradesh counterpart to seek release of water from the Kandaleru dam, he said she must also meet the Karnataka Chief Minister to break the impasse in the Cauvery issue.

He ruled out any possibility of forming a third front at the Centre without the Congress and the BJP. Regional parties were key players only in Assembly elections. The CJP would strive to form a third front without the AIADMK and the DMK for the 2006 Assembly election, he said.
