Science Centre planned in Dharwad

BANGALORE NOV. 29. The State Government has formed the Dharwad Regional Science Centre Society and appointed 13 members to the governing body of the society to set up a Regional Science Centre in Dharwad.

The Minister of State for Science and Technology, Nafees Fazal, told presspersons here today that the centre would be established on 100 acres of land donated by Karnatak University, Dharwad. The science centre would provide space for many activities such as fun science, space museum, technology information transfer and catalysis, study of biodiversity, herbal/medicinal garden, information age, outdoor science park, education and training programmes, and exhibits development laboratory.

The outdoor science park would include space park, solar park, rainwater harvesting, hands-on exhibits as basic parameters of science and technology, picnic garden, and science-based park rides. The Government had requested Essel World to set up the infotainment projects, the Minister said.

The members of the governing body of the society are the Minister for Science and Technology and Indian Systems of Medicine (chairman); the Vice-Chancellor of Karnatak University, Dharwad, (co-chairman); the Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad; the Chief Executive Officer of the zilla panchayat, Dharwad; the Finance Commissioner and Secretary to Government, Finance Department; the Secretary, Information Technology, Biotechnology, Science and Technology Department; representatives of ISRO, National Council of Science Museums (official members); and the Registrar, Karnatak University, Dharwad (member secretary).

The non-official members are Veerendra Heggade, Dharmadhikari, Dharmasthala; Sudha Murthy, chairperson, Infosys Foundation; R.N. Shetty, industrialist; and Nagalothimath, former president, Karnataka Rajya Vignana Parishat.
