Indian Systems of Medicine wing for all district hospitals

By Our Special Correspondent

BANGALORE NOV. 29. The Minister of State for Science and Technology, Nafees Fazal, has said that Indian Systems of Medicine and Homoeopathy sections will be set up in 19 district hospitals for which the Centre has agreed to release Rs. 35 lakh to each hospital.

She told presspersons here today that the decision to set up the section had been taken at a meeting held on November 20 and attended by all the district surgeons, the Health Commissioner, the Director of Health, and other officers.

Under the Centrally sponsored scheme, funds will be released to the hospitals in Kolar, Tumkur, Chamarajanagar, Chikmagalur, Shimoga, Hassan, Davangere, Haveri, Dharwad, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada, Belgaum, Bijapur, Bagalkot, Raichur, Bellary, Gulbarga, and Koppal.

Ms. Fazal said there were 739 dispensaries in the State and the Government was releasing Rs. 18,000 to each dispensary for the purchase of drugs. Under the Centrally sponsored scheme this year, Rs. 25,000 more had been made available to 60 dispensaries. A proposal would be sent to the Union Government soon to release funds for the rest of the dispensaries, she said.

Outdoor treatment centres would be established in the Koppal and Chitradurga district hospitals owing to non-availability of buildings. A sum of Rs. 10 lakh each would be released to set up the centres. Panchakrama Therapy Centres would be established in Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital, Victoria Hospital, and K.C. General Hospital with assistance of Rs. 22 lakh from the Centre. Ayurveda, homoeopathy, and unani out-patient departments had been opened in Victoria and Bowring hospitals.

With the objective of promoting the Indian Systems of Medicine, the State Government had written to all deputy commissioners to allot at least 10 acres of land to grow medicinal plants in all district and taluk centres with the help of Ayurveda dispensaries and hospitals, the Minister said.

Referring to the increasing number of AIDS patients in the State, Ms. Fazal said she had submitted a proposal to the Bill Gates Foundation seeking Rs. one crore for research and development (R&D) to tackle the disease.
