Reacting to the legislative bill in Taiwan for the facilitation of a defensive referendum on its `independence', Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, the highest Chinese Government organisation that deals with the territory, said "we will absolutely not allow anyone to try to split Taiwan from China''. The tensions follow the adoption of the referendum bill by the Legislative Yuan (Parliament) in Taipei on Thursday. It provided for a plebiscite to decide on Taiwan's independence in the event of a military move by Beijing to absorb it, which remains home to the descendants of and survivors among the `nationalists' who lost to the Communist Party of China that created the People's Republic of China.
