Kerala retains title

By Our Sports Reporter

Bangalore Nov. 29. Kerala retained the overall team championship title with 242 points in the HUDCO National Youth athletics championship that concluded at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium here on Saturday.

Tamil Nadu with 198 points secured the runner-up tag. Kerala topped the women's section with 142 points while Tamil Nadu led the men's segment with 91 points.

The final day ushered in 11 new meet records while Karnataka's B.G. Nagaraj and Tamil Nadu's K.N. Priya emerged as the fastest man and woman of the championship respectively. The host's moment of delight turned out to be a surprise as Nagaraj won the 100m dash with a new meet record of 10.64s.

K.N. Priya bagged a double as she topped the women's 100m hurdles and later did an encore in racing past her rivals in the 100m sprint.

Priya set a new meet record in the 100m hurdles at 13.80s that clipped Debi Bose's earlier mark of 14.30s set at Pondicherry, 1996. Priya was also aided by the wind factor at 2.6 metre per second in the hurdles.

Priya, who had a low key performance at the recent Afro Asian Games at Hyderabad, attributed her comeback to better confidence levels.

"At the Afro Asian I was a little nervous as it was an international meet," said the MBA student from M.O.P. Vaishnav College, Chennai.

Priya was adjudged as the `best women athlete' of the championship.
