CoE boys, Tamil Nadu girls triumph

KOCHI NOV. 29. There is a special joy in watching the great Bengal table tennis bandwagon. The team's players are full of life, a fighting bunch.

The Centre of Excellence boys (Kolkata), powered by the great Bengal fighting spirit, made it a dream debut after dethroning defending champion PSPB Academy 3-1 in the final. Tamil Nadu retained the girls' title with a 3-1 verdict over Bengal.

State junior champion J. Swarna was the star of Tamil Nadu's victory over Bengal, bouncing back from two games down to defeat Soumi Mondal in the fourth singles.

The scores (inter-State championship): Boys final: Centre of Excellence, Kolkata bt Petroleum Sports Promotion Board Academy, Ajmer 3-1 (Soumyajit Sarkar bt Devesh Karia 11-9, 11-5, 11-6; Subhadip Das bt Sameer Prabhu 11-9, 11-2, 4-11, 11-4; Amarnath Das lost to Zubin Kumar 11-6, 5-11, 17-15, 10-12, 13-15; Subhadeep Das bt Devesh Karia 11-8, 11-2, 9-11, 12-10).

Girls final: Tamil Nadu bt Bengal 3-1 (J.Swarna bt Sayantika Kundu 11-6, 14-12, 8-11, 12-10; S.Sangeetha bt Soumi Mondal 7-11, 11-6, 11-9, 11-2; K.Shamini lost to Runa Roy 8-11, 8-11, 4-11; J.Swarna bt Soumi Mondal 5-11, 6-11, 11-5, 13-11, 11-8).
