BJP-Congress trade charges

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI NOV. 29. With barely a day to go for the polls, the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party today traded charges in the prestigious Gole Market constituency. The Delhi Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, who is seeking re-election from here, alleged that the supporters of the BJP candidate, Poonam Azad, attacked her party workers at R.K. Mission Lane this afternoon.

However, Ms. Azad, wife of cricketer-turned-politician, Kirti Azad, alleged that the Congress workers attacked her and her supporters when she was on a door-to-door campaign in the area. She alleged that Congress workers in three vehicles attacked them and left the scene within minutes.

Charging the BJP with indulging in mischief, Ms. Dikshit alleged that everything had been pre-planned to generate sympathy for Ms. Azad. She alleged that some BJP workers entered the Ashram Lane office of the Congress worker, Dharampal, and ransacked the entire place. They also damaged the Ambassador car stationed there and thrashed an 85- year-old Congress worker, Malkotia.

"The BJP hooligans are trying to use muscle power and disturb peace in the area and we have written to the Chief Electoral Officer for Delhi and the Returning Officer for the Gole Market constituency in this regard seeking appropriate measures," she said. The party has urged the Chief Electoral Officer to declare the entire constituency sensitive.

The Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi), Manoj Lall, said the police received a complaint this afternoon from Ms. Azad alleging that some men in a taxi attacked her and her supporters, while a Congress worker lodged a complaint that BJP supporters at R. K. Ashram Lane thrashed him. The police have registered First Information Report in both the cases. Though no arrests have been made so far, investigations are on, the police said.
