BJP spent Rs. 200 crores on campaign: Tytler

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI NOV. 29. Senior Congress leader and Delhi Congress chief spokesman, Jagdish Tytler, today accused the Bharatiya Janata Party of blatant display of money power during the campaigning for the Delhi Assembly polls. He charged that around Rs. 200 crores had been spent by the BJP for financing its election campaign and that of its candidates, which included hiring of film and TV stars and inserting huge advertisements in the newspapers through unknown organisations.

In a statement here, Mr. Tytler said the advertisements issued by the BJP and its allies were in violation of the code of conduct, as no print line was being given below the advertisements in the newspapers that was a must under the election law. There is no account of from where money was flowing in for such a high profile campaign and the saffron party had spent much beyond the permissible limit making a mockery of the whole electoral process. Accusing the BJP and its leaders of misusing official machinery in the Delhi elections, Mr. Tytler said large advertisements were being displayed about the achievements of the Central Government under some pretext or the other to help the BJP in the Capital. He said an enquiry should be held to ascertain the affiliations of the organisations that were issuing such advertisements in the newspapers for the BJP.

Stating that all this will not help the BJP's cause, Mr. Tytler said the people of Delhi had already made up their mind and would go with the Congress as they have seen the real face of the BJP which has nothing else to offer except for but religious and caste politics. It was no secret that the BJP-led Central Government had set a new record in scams and had patronised corruption at the highest level. At the same time, he said the Congress apprehended that BJP would create trouble on the polling day and urged the Congress workers to remain alert against any kind of mischief by the BJP or its cadres. The Congress leaders including the Chief Minister, Sheila Dikshit, AICC leader in-charge Delhi, Ahmed Patel, DPCC president, Chaudhary Prem Singh and former Outer Delhi MP, Sajjan Kumar, had addressed nearly 250 meetings in the Capital during the past fortnight. In addition to this, the party had organised nearly 5,000 corner meetings in an effort to reach out to the people and apprise them about the achievements of the Congress Government and its future agenda.

He accused Mr. Khurana of committing yet another fraud on the people by superimposing the photograph of the teenaged rapist along with the Congress candidate from Kamla Nagar, Shadi Ram, to defame him and the party. He said after seeing the photograph, it was clear that trick photography had been used by Mr. Khurana to mislead the police and the electorate. It was unfortunate that Mr. Khurana was stooping to such a level as he had been unnerved by the constant reports that the BJP was heading for a big defeat in the Assembly polls.
