Bruce Reid is India's bowling coach

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 30. Former Australian left-arm speedster Bruce Reid has been confirmed as the bowling coach for India's ongoing tour of Australia.

The President of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Jagmohan Dalmiya, announced the appointment after the Board's Working Committee met here on Sunday. Reid has been awaiting the green signal from the Board to join the Indian squad before first Test commences in Brisbane on December 4.

For the record, the 40-year-old Reid has played 27 Tests between December 1985 and November 1992 and taken 113 wickets. In 61 One-Day Internationals, Reid who was known for his disciplined bowling, took 63 wickets.

Though Mr. Dalmiya took questions pertaining to the Kale controversy but avoided making any concrete statements on the subject. He defended the decision to suspend Kale by saying, "this was not a suspension'' but only a move to keep the cricketer away from the game for the duration of the inquiry conducted by Subba Rao.

"If I say anything more on the subject, it is likely to prejudice the outcome of the inquiry commission,'' said Dalmiya.

However, he categorically stated that the decision to suspend the player in question was well within the constitution of the Board and "I was convinced that the charges (by two selectors) warranted an inquiry. To err is human. But in future, in a similar situation, I am sure I'll take a similar decision,'' said Dalmiya.

Earlier, Dalmiya announced that before the next ICC Trophy, to be hosted by England from September 10 to 25, 2004, India would be involved in a tri-nation One-Day series, including Australia and Pakistan at a yet-to-be-confirmed venue in Europe. The preparatory exercise would continue with India playing three ODIs with England.

He also announced that India would host the Asia Cup (under-17) in January next. Four Test playing nations of the region and 16 ICC member countries would be part of the field. Matches were due to be staged in Chennai, Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam, with Banglore hosting the semifinals and the final.
