A shame

Sir, — It is a national shame that Biharis in Assam and elsewhere are being targeted by militant organisations such as the ULFA. The victims are poor labourers. Even after 56 years of Independence, we do not consider ourselves Indians. We are still Assamese, Bengalis, Tamils and Telugus. National and emotional integration, which Nehru passionately propagated, are woefully elusive.

R. Ramaiah,

Pudukkottai, T.N.

Sir, — The attacks are shocking and unfortunate. This is the first time that an all-India selection for category `D' employees (for 20,000 vacancies in the whole country) is being done by the Railway Recruitment Board. Obviously, politics played a part in staggering the examination schedule, thereby allowing multiple applications. If the examination had been held on the same date in all the centres and multiple applications had not been allowed, there would have been no inter-State scuffles.

Trideep Lahkar,

New Delhi

Sir, — I agree with the views of V. Narayanan, (Nov. 25) that for the recruitment of khalasis, gangmen and other class IV employees, conducting a written examination on a zonal basis or on an all-India basis in major cities is not only unjust but also far-fetched. The original set-up of recruiting them at the divisional level should be restored.

R. Dwarakanatha Rao,

Guntakal, A.P
