Serves no purpose

Sir, — The West Bengal Government has chosen to ban the latest book by Taslima Nasreen stating that it contains matter that could cause "enmity between different groups on grounds of religion" ( Nov. 29 ). In this internet age, excerpts from the controversial portions can be read, obtained and downloaded. The ban will only serve to get some free-of-cost publicity for the author and arouse the curiosity of the reading public.

R. Venkatesan Iyengar,

Gulbarga, Karnataka
