West Bengal civic polls peaceful

By Our Special Correspondent

KOLKATA NOV. 30. Elections in four municipalities and byelections in wards in six others passed off peacefully today, barring a few stray incidents. The average turn-out of voters was 70 per cent, the West Bengal Election Commissioner, Ajoy Sinha, told The Hindu.

The four civic bodies are Jhargram in Midnapore West district, Howrah, Krishnagar in Nadia district and Behrampore in Murshidabad district.

Re-poll in one booth in Howrah [ward no.32] was ordered following suspension of polling after miscreants entered the booth, snatched ballot papers, poured water into the ballot-boxes and manhandled a polling officer, according to the Secretary, State Election Commission, K.K. Chakravarty.

In another incident, a candidate in ward no. 5 of the Jhargram municipality was held while attempting to snatch ballot papers from a polling officer. Counting of votes in all the municipalities barring Howrah will begin tomorrow morning and is expected to be over by the afternoon.

Two of the civic boards — Jhargram and the Howrah Municipal Corporation — are under the control of the ruling Left Front.
