Fire Service men and police, with the help of the slum-dwellers, put out the flames. The couple could not escape while their neighbour, a handicapped woman, Nagu, and her husband, Babu, escaped with their one-year-old daughter minutes before their hut caught fire. Babu suspects that Parvathi, whose body was found near the door of her hut, might have fallen into a crater while trying to open the door (the hut is on a heap of boulders). Police said the fire could have started from the door of the victims' hut making it impossible for them to escape. The two bodies were handed over to the parents of Parvathi after post-mortem.
