Two burnt to death in slum fire

By Govind D. Belgaumkar

BANGALORE Nov. 30. A man and his wife were burnt alive in a fire that destroyed 13 huts at Kunthigrama, a slum in Cholanayanakahalli in Hebbal Police Station limits here in the early hours of Sunday. The names of the victims were given as Janardhana (42), an autorickshaw driver, and Parvathi (33), an ayah at a private school.

Fire Service men and police, with the help of the slum-dwellers, put out the flames.

The couple could not escape while their neighbour, a handicapped woman, Nagu, and her husband, Babu, escaped with their one-year-old daughter minutes before their hut caught fire.

Babu suspects that Parvathi, whose body was found near the door of her hut, might have fallen into a crater while trying to open the door (the hut is on a heap of boulders). Police said the fire could have started from the door of the victims' hut making it impossible for them to escape.

The two bodies were handed over to the parents of Parvathi after post-mortem.
