Karnataka retains title; Varun scalps eight

VISAKHAPATNAM NOV. 30. Left-arm spinner K. Varun's eight-wicket haul in the Goan second innings helped Andhra win its last round-robin match and finish runner-up in the South Zone under-17 tournament for the V. Pattabhiraman Trophy here on Sunday.

Karnataka retained the trophy even before it took on Tamil Nadu in its last round robin match.

But with Karnataka gaining first innings lead and the match ending in a draw, Tamil Nadu failed to grab the second spot and had to satisfy itself with the third place.

Kerala gained two points from the drawn match against Hyderabad. Kerala and Hyderabad shared the second position last season but now finished fourth and fifth.

Goa, which failed to gain any points, was placed last.

The scores:

Goa 193 and 129 in 74.1 overs (R. Desouza 37, K. Varun eight for 51) lost to Andhra 257 and 67 for one in 11.2 overs. Andhra four points, Goa nil.

Tamil Nadu 136 and 221 for nine decl. in 66 overs (Yumahesh 49, H. Gopinath 37, Karvi three for 42) drew with Karnataka 174 and 109 for five in 73 overs (K.B. Pavan 34, Devaraj 27). Karnataka 2, Tamil Nadu nil.

Hyderabad 217 and 250 for nine in 93 overs (P.S.S. Bharat Kumar 44, M. Azzaharuddin 35, P. Sushanth 30, A. Rahul four for 54) vs Kerala 244. Hyderabad nil, Kerala 2.

Final standings: 1. Karnataka (18 points), 2. Andhra (10), 2. Tamil Nadu (8), 4. Kerala (6), 5. Hyderabad (4), 6. Goa (0).
