Karthik shows Amarnath the exit

By Our Sports Reporter

Madhurika Patkar, girls' top seed, who cruised into the pre-quarterfinals of the LIC Junior National table tennis championship at Kochi on Sunday.

KOCHI NOV. 30. He must have pressed the rewind button quite a few times in his mind this morning. And when Karnataka's promising C.P. Karthik faced fifth-seeded Amarnath Das in the 65th LIC junior National table tennis championship here on Sunday, he had his battle strategy crisp and clear.

"I watched Amarnath closely in the inter-State team final last evening. And I realised that he had a problem tackling spin. That he was very uncomfortable when the action got slow. And that's exactly what I did today, I slowed down the game and served a lot of spin,'' said the 13-year-old Karthik after jolting the SAI-Centre of Excellence player in the boys second round.

The strategy fetched the Karnataka junior champion, a trainee of former junior national star Vasant Bharadwaj at the Winners Choice Academy (Bangalore), his best-ever win in the national circuit. The victory also carried him to the pre-quarterfinals.

Also making the exit was boys' eighth seed Omkar Torgalkar of Maharashtra, who bowed to N.N. Kishore of Andhra Pradesh. However, the boys and girls' top seeds, Soumyajit Sarkar (CoE) and Maharashtra's Madhurika Patkar cruised into the pre-quarterfinals without much fuss.
