Naidu calls for focus on HRD

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD NOV. 30. The Chief Minister, N. Chandrababu Naidu, on Sunday underscored the need for human resources development (HRD), as that alone would contribute to the country becoming a superpower in the near future.

Flagging off an impressive Hyderabad 10K Run at People's Plaza on Necklace Road, he recalled that the financial analyst, Goldmann Sachs, had noted that BRIC (Brazil, Russia, India and China) were potential global economic superpowers of the future. "We will prove ourselves to the world and for that we need human resources," he reiterated.

Addressing a massive gathering, Mr. Naidu said people needed more such runs. "Whatever happens in Hyderabad, it is being emulated elsewhere in the country," he said, adding that the administration was working to provide more avenues for walkers.

An estimated 14,000 participants got going after Mr. Naidu flagged them off on the 10 K and 5 K runs simultaneously. Prominent among others present were the Mayor, Teegala Krishna Reddy, the MCH Commissioner, Chitra Ramachandran, film stars -- Venkatesh, Tarun, Udaykiran, Srikanth -- Akkineni Venkat, Anita Chowdhary, producer D. Suresh, sports stars -- Sania Mirza and Pullela Gopichand -- Dr. Ramesh Babu of Medwin, Dr. Kennedy of Apollo, Vijay Mahajan, Dean, Indian School of Business and the Director of Culture, Arja Srikanth.

From 7 to 70 years and over, they were all there, saying Three Cheers to Hyderabad. Mr. Srikanth said the proceeds of the run would go to orphanages and for underprivileged sportspersons. After the VIPs left, it was time for the visitors and the participants to relax and enjoy the cultural performances. It started with a musical jugalbandi with D. Sitaramaiah on the violin and Panduranga Mutali on the sitar, followed by a flute recital and dance by the group `Uttara' and a Rajasthani folk dance number by 12 year-old Shweta Soni.

The winners in the 5 K category were Venkatseshaiah (Men), B. Nagamani (Women), P. Madhubabu (Boys), K. Bhavani (Girls) and E. Subbarayudu (Veterans). In the 10 K category, the winners were Aman Saini (Men), S. Pavani (Women), Vivek (Boys), K. Padmavathi (Girls) and C. Subba Rao (Veterans)
