dated December 2, 1953: No Newspapers in New York

Monday, 1st December, made unusual news in New York for the reason that the city woke to a day without a single major newspaper appearing. Four morning newspapers were hit by a strike of photo engravers, and no editions could come out. The strike continued through the day hitting three major eveningers as well. The New York Herald Tribune, the only major daily to print a Monday edition, suspended publication on Sunday night. The other six papers affected were the New York Times, Mirror, News, Post, Journal-American, and World Telegram and Sun. Negotiators on behalf of the Photo Engravers Union were engaged in talks with the managements; but no settlement had been reached till late on Monday evening. Progress was expected only on Tuesday the 2nd.
