Seoul to go ahead with troop plan

By P. S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE Dec. 1. South Korea today maintained that it would not allow itself to be deterred by the `terrorist' killing of two of its civilians in Iraq.

Though the President, Roh Moo-hyun, described the incident as "unforgivable and inhumane'', the Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister, Yoon Young-kwan, said in Seoul today that "there are no changes in plan to send troops to Iraq''.

Seoul plans to send 3,000 military personnel to augment its contingent of nearly 600 engineers and medical professionals belonging to the armed forces.

The National Security Adviser, Ra Jong-il, said that Seoul "won't link the terrorist attack to our troop despatch plan''. However, it has not been clarified whether the additional personnel would perform only `non-combat' duties.
