Letters to the Editor
Sir, This is with reference to your editorial "Need for democratic restraint" (Dec. 1). The Chief Election Commissioner, J.M. Lyngdoh's threat to withdraw the national party status of the Congress appears hasty. K.D. Viswanaathan, Coimbatore, T.N. * * * Sir, Mr. Lyngdoh's threat must be viewed in the context of the political parties' tendency to flout the norms with impunity. Mr. Lyngdoh deserves appreciation for his determination to ensure free and fair elections. Kanwar Pal Singh Chauhan, Chandigarh * * * Sir, Unless the Commission is vigilant and takes stern action against any ruling party transgressing the Code of Conduct, the Opposition will be put to a disadvantage. Mr. Lyngdoh's proposed action may be too strong, but a threat is necessary. T.S. Padmanabhan, Chennai * * * Sir, Mr. Lyngdoh should get full credit for the conduct of elections in Kashmir and Gujarat. If not for his tough approach, it would not have been possible. Though his threat may appear harsh, it is perhaps the only way to deal with politicians who try to undermine constitutional bodies for personal gain. The Magsaysay Award winner is a perfect role model for aspiring public servants. S. Lakshmi Priya, Tiruchi, T.N.
