Airports' modernisation suffers setback

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI DEC. 1. The Vajpayee Government's mega project for modernisation of Delhi and Mumbai airports suffered a setback today as the Government decided to call for new tenders for appointment of financial consultants to the project.

The decision to start the process afresh and invite new tenders was taken at a meeting here between the Union Finance Minister, Jaswant Singh, and the Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, Rajiv Pratap Rudy.

Earlier, the Group of Ministers comprising the Disinvestment and Communications Minister, Arun Shourie, and the Law Minister, Arun Jaitley, besides Mr. Singh and Mr. Rudy had short-listed three firms — Ernst & Young, ABN Amro and KPMG — for appointment as financial consultants to the Rs. 4,000-crore project.

During its two meetings last month, the GoM had witnessed detailed presentations by the three short-listed firms. Sources in the Civil Aviation Ministry said the GoM could not make up its mind due to several factors, one being wide differences in the tenders submitted by the firms.

The exercise at this stage would mean that the process is likely to suffer some delay even after the modernisation project had got the Cabinet's nod.

The Government is keen to develop the two major metro airports as world-class hubs of international travel.
