Civic polls peaceful

By Barun Das Gupta

GUWAHATI DEC. 1. Elections to 54 municipal boards and town committees and to the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) in the State today ended peacefully. The percentage of polling was 65 to 70. Counting will be held on Wednesday.

State Election Commission (SEC) sources here said repolling had been ordered in "some'' polling booths of Dhubri and Karimganj municipalities, following complaints of "irregularities.'' The repoll will be held tomorrow.

In the capital, election to the Corporation failed to generate enthusiasm among the voters. Preliminary reports said polling was about 55 per cent. The main contest was between the ruling Congress and the Opposition AGP. Except in some areas, the BJP did not seem to have emerged a major contender. Several wards in Guwahati have a sizable chunk of Hindi-speaking voters who turned up to exercise their franchise in large numbers.
