Leftists retain two municipalities

By Our Special Correspondent

Kolkata Dec. 1. The results of Sunday's elections to four municipalities announced today showed that the voters were in favour of maintaining the `status quo' with the ruling Leftists retaining Howrah and Jhargram in Midnapore district and the Opposition Congress Behrampur and Krishnanagar in the districts of Murshidabad and Nadia.

Mamata Banerjee's Trinamool Congress, the principal Opposition, secured only three seats.

The Left Front retained the Jhargram municipality, winning 12 out of 17 seats with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), the leader of the Front, securing 10. The Congress and the Trinamool bagged two seats each. While the others won one seat each.

In Howrah the CPI(M) itself has won 15 of the 19 seats and the leftists are set to capture the 50-strong municipality. The Trinamool and the Bharatiya Janata Party, its ally, secured one seat each.

The Congress' grip on Krishnanagar and Behrampur municipalities remained intact.

The party put up a stunning performance in Behrampur where it captured all the 23 seats, cashing in on the personal influence and bases of MP, Adhir Chowdhury.
