The former Punjab Chief Minister, Parkash Singh Badal, talking to presspersons in Ropar on Monday after a court sent him and his son to judicial custody in a disproportionate assets case. PTI
Surinder Kaur, wife of Mr. Badal, also an accused in the case, did not appear in the court as she was indisposed. The Badals had been accused of possessing unaccounted assets worth Rs. 78 crores. Defence counsel prayed that bail be granted as the Badal family had cooperated with the investigations. However, counsel for the Vigilance sought time to study the reply filed by the Badals. When the court ruled that the plea for granting bail would be considered on December 3, defence counsel sought an interim bail, for which the pronouncement was kept in abeyance till afternoon. Finally the court refused to grant bail. Traffic on the Ropar-Chandigarh highway was disrupted for most part of the day today as SAD workers resorted to protests. While unconfirmed reports said that at least one person died after a lathicharge in Kurali town, an Akali spokesman said dozens of SAD workers, including two sitting legislators, were injured.
