The order of Bedi's extradition was communicated to the Central Bureau of Investigation today by the authorities in Lisbon. Though she has the right to file an appeal in the Portuguese Supreme Court, the High Court order has come as a major success for the CBI, which is now looking forward to a similar order in the case of Salem. The two were arrested in Lisbon on September 18, 2002, and charged with travelling on forged documents. While lauding Portugal's cooperation, sources said it was significant as the two countries did not have an extradition treaty. The CBI had furnished the Portuguese authorities with all details relating to Salem and Bedi, their past record and proof of their identities. Both were held guilty on charges of forgery and awarded prison terms by a Lisbon court on Friday. While Salem was sentenced to four and a half years in jail, Bedi was given a two-year sentence.
