Tension in Chittagong as tribals begin stir

By Haroon Habib

DHAKA Dec. 2. Trouble is brewing in the Chittagong Hill Tracts of Bangladesh once again, with the former tribal guerrillas accusing the Government of not implementing the peace treaty even after six years of its signing and the authorities pledging to put down any show of dissidence.

The Parbatta Chatttagram Jana Sanghati Samity (PCJSS), the political wing of the former guerrilla outfit, Shanti Bahini, has called for a programme of agitation. As part of this, a road blockade was organised on Tuesday, the date of signing of the peace treaty six years ago, and a dawn-to-dusk hartal on Dec. 8.

The PCJSS chief, J. B. Larma, has threatened to paralyse the hill districts if the security camps in the hills were not withdrawn before Dec. 31. Tension has mounted in the hill districts following the announcement of the agitation programme.
