He was here to address the State-level election orientation camp of the APCC attended by party leaders from local bodies to AICC office-bearers from the State. Two AICC observers -- Narayana Swamy and Krishna Murthy -- both MPs, accompanied him. Mr. Azad had separate meetings with the Telangana region Congress leaders to discuss the election strategy after announcing that the names of the members of the Telangana Regional Congress Coordination Committee would be announced in a couple of days. The meeting was a follow-up of the series of meetings held in New Delhi recently. Mr. Azad promised APCC leaders that he would keep their company throughout the `Praja Hita Yatra' in Telangana region which is all set to begin in the second week of this month. Two other observers would continue to be stationed in AP till the completion of the elections along with the AICC secretary, R.P.N. Singh. The AICC leader lauded the former PCC president, M. Satyanarayana Rao, for the programmes undertaken by him during his three-year stint. He added that Mr. Rao's leadership had given a new direction to the party. He hailed the contribution of the CLP leader in the dissolved Assembly, Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, in strengthening the party apparatus. Dr. Reddy's padayatra across the State during peak summer was remarkable and helped rejuvenate the party, he added. The APCC camp was markedly different from earlier such meetings with senior leaders complimenting the role of others. The categorical assurance of Mr. Azad that merit would be the sole criteria in the selection of candidates in the next elections enthused the gathering further. The PCC president, D. Srinivas, set the tone in the morning by urging the leaders not to raise controversial matters. Measured attack on Telugu Desam was advised and intemperate language was ruled out. "The Chief Minister has lost his cool. But, let us not stoop to his level," he reminded the audience and the advice was adhered to. The camp broached upon several aspects of election preparedness and senior leaders laid down several dos and don'ts. Reminding the gathering that at least 40 seats were lost in the last elections due to improper planning, the speakers asked workers not to repeat the mistakes this time. Speakers at the meeting mentioned about the care to be taken before, during and immediately after the polling, importance of driving home the knowledge of electronic voting methods among the illiterate voters was, key functions of the polling agents and issues like prevention of booth capturing and bogus voting. The speakers sounded a note of caution to the leaders on the TD designs in seeking heavy deployment of Central forces as Mr. Chandrababu Naidu could misuse those to his advantage. "He has done it earlier and he would do it now. Detention of key agents at the time of polling, scaring away people from coming to the booths and bracketing the Opposition strongholds as hypersensitive areas for preventing Congress supporters enthusiastic participation are just some of the methods,'' they said. Ex-TDP MLA to join party: Former TD MLA, Malreddy Rangareddy, will join the Congress on Wednesday. He will come to Gandhi Bhavan, the party headquarters, in a rally from Hayathnagar, a press release stated on Tuesday.
