Vora, Harinderpal advance in qualifying round

CHENNAI DEC. 2. There were just two matches in the first day's programme in the qualifying phase of the PSA super satellite Chennai Open at the SDAT-TNSRA courts on Tuesday.

Both the matches involved Indians, with Harinderpal Singh beating Naresh Kumar and Rushab Vora defeating Ritesh Sharma. Both the winners entered the final round of four matches to be held on the morrow. Four players will then qualify for the main draw of 16.

There was little action on the courts though overseas players began to trickle in for the event, being held for the first time in Chennai. On Tuesday evening, two Pakistanis — Khayal Muhammad and Saeed Hassan with both seeded in the 5-8 bracket — chose to have a rigorous work-out. The two have been regularly participating in the circuit and Khayal was in Chennai for the World junior championship last year when Pakistan won the boys' team title.

Khayal plays popular Indian junior Saurav Ghosal in his opening match and that should give the spectators something to watch out for on day one. National champion Ritwik Bhattacharya will be there as the third or fourth seed. Australia's Mike Corren, ranked 52 in the world as per the November ratings, has been given the pride of place with England's Mark Heather seeded two. Players from various parts of the world will be here for the $6,000 event.

The results (qualifying draw, first round): Rushab Vora bt Ritesh Sharma 15-10, 15-10, 8-15, 17-14; Harinderpal Singh bt Naresh Kumar 15-9, 15-3, 15-10. — Our Special Correspondent
