Japan hails India-Pakistan CBMs

By P.S. Suryanarayana

SINGAPORE Dec. 2. Japan today welcomed the latest moves by India and Pakistan to resume air links between the two and also allow overflights across their respective air space.

Tokyo, which has been closely monitoring the new developments on the India-Pakistan diplomatic front, had earlier hailed their ceasefire accord.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry said in Tokyo today that it "highly evaluates a series of confidence-building measures'' that the two South Asian neighbours had recently taken.

Japan hoped that "these positive developments will improve further the India-Pakistan relations and promote mutual understanding between the peoples of both the countries''.

Japan's interactive relations with India and Pakistan nose-dived following their nuclear-weapons testing in 1998, but it later eased the economic sanctions imposed on the two countries.

While the reversal of the sanctions took place in the context of the contributions that both India and Pakistan made towards the global "war on terrorism,''

Japan has been watching their moves to enhance economic links with them.
